Kool & the Gang, the legendary funk disco band from the 1970s and 80s, will headline the Rotterdam city event Robin Rotterdam Unlimited. Kool & the Gang will give a free concert in the Rotterdam city centre on Sunday, 20 July 2014.

It is one of the many concerts that will take place during Robin Rotterdam Unlimited (18-20 July 2014). The festival will immerse the Rotterdam city centre in music, dance, literature, street art and theatre performances for three full days. The Summer Carnival, which is one of the highpoints of the festival, will celebrate its 30th anniversary this summer.

In addition to Kool & the Gang, Brazilian singer Sergio Mendes will also be performing at the festival. Mendes is a producer, composer, keyboard player and vocalist who scored the worldwide hit ‘Mas Que Nada’. Syrian musician Omar Souleyman and the Rotterdam rap group Broederliefde will take to the stage on 20 July. The musicians will give free performances on the open-air stages in the city centre.

This is the second edition of Robin Rotterdam Unlimited. The festival is a perfect match with Rotterdam’s DNA: a young, dynamic and international port city with a bubbling mix of some 170 nationalities. Robin Rotterdam Unlimited showcases the latest trends in the field of music, dance, poetry, street art, art and culture. Throughout the three-day event, visitors will have the opportunity to see a wide range of (free) acts and performances on various stages and to enjoy the Summer Carnival Parade in the Rotterdam city centre.
Crazy Sexy Cool is a new component this year. This dance event has taken the Dutch and Belgian club scene by storm in recent years. Crazy Sexy Cool will pull out all the stops during Robin Rotterdam Unlimited on 20 July with performances by Sidney Samson, Shermanology and Gregor Salto.

Summer Carnival turns 30
One of the highpoints of Robin Rotterdam Unlimited 2014 is the Summer Carnival that will be celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. No one less than Soca and dance hall icon Machel Montano will join in the party on 19 July. Montano is one of the most successful Caribbean artists from Trinidad and Tobago. Groups from Trinidad and France will be coming to Rotterdam especially to take part in this 30th anniversary edition of the Summer Carnival.

The Summer Carnival, which has been part of Robin Rotterdam Unlimited since last year, was initiated in 1984 and followed the example of the carnival celebrations in the Caribbean. It quickly grew into one of the largest free events in the Netherlands. Floats and carnival groups take part in the street parade that winds a 2.5 kilometre path through the Rotterdam city centre. True to tradition, the ‘Battle of Drums’ brass band competition will take place again this year.

Robin Rotterdam Unlimited attracted some 900,000 visitors last year with performances by artists including Manu Chao and Asaf Avidan. If you would like to find out more about Robin Rotterdam Unlimited, watch a preview of the festival here.
