Hieronymus Bosch Grand Tour announced for 2016

In 2016, seven major museums in Brabant will present a contemporary exhibition programme entitled Bosch Grand Tour to coincide with the exhibition Hieronymus Bosch – Visions of a Genius (13 February 2016 – 8 May 2016) at Het Noordbrabants Museum. Be inspired and surprised during a voyage of discovery through contemporary art, design and culture in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Breda, Eindhoven and Tilburg.

The programme features new works by Jeroen Kooijmans, Atelier Van Lieshout, Jan Fabre and Gabriel Lester alongside a digital interpretation of the Garden of Earthly Delights, the ‘reconstruction’ of a tapestry and an entirely new take on Bosch’s animals. Over a year of Hieronymus Bosch as an inspiration for young and old.

PROGRAMME BOSCH GRAND TOUR

Jan Fabre: Bosch in Congo

Fabre’s monumental ‘mosaic panels’ from the series Tribute to Hieronymus Bosch in Congo portray the cruelties and absurdity the former Belgian colony suffered.

Het Noordbrabants Museum | 11 June 2016 - 18 September 2016

Meesterwerken uit de collectie Brukenthal [Masterpieces from the Brukenthal Collection]

The work of Flemish and Dutch masters of Bosch’s era from the Romanian Brukenthal Collection. Together with Bosch, painters such as Jan van Eyck, Jacob Jordaens and Pieter Brueghel de Jonge elevated the painting of the Low Countries to exceptional heights.

Het Noordbrabants Museum | 18 June 2016 - 9 October 2016

De terugkeer van de olifant [The return of the elephant]

Hieronymus Bosch was much copied in paintings, prints and even tapestries. This exhibition consists of 16th-century engravings, woodcuts as well as the new, Jan Fabre-designed tapestry that was woven at the TextielMuseum.

Het Noordbrabants Museum | 29 October 2016 - 29 January 2017

De Zeven Hoofdzonden: Gurt Swanenberg and Pieter Bruegel

The seven deadly sins inspire artist Gurt Swanenberg. He paints in insane detail on animal skeletons with a very fine brush. Pieter Breugel’s engravings, also inspired by this theme, will be exhibited side by side with Swanenberg’s work.

Het Noordbrabants Museum | 29 October 2016 - 29 January 2017

Jeroen Kooijmans - The Fish Pond Song

The monumental video triptych The Fish Pond Song by Jeroen Kooijmans will premiere at the start of the Hieronymus Bosch year 2016. This three-part, epic artwork is the culmination of a decade of filming in the Netherlands, Hungary and on Curacao. The main sources of inspiration are the famous Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch and contemporary history since 9/11; an event that Jeroen Kooijmans experienced up close.

Stedelijk Museum ‘s-Hertogenbosch | 19 December 2015 - 5 June 2016

Nacho Carbonell

Nacho Carbonell (Valencia 1980) views his chairs, couches and lamps as living creatures, each with its own personality. Their bizarre shapes mean they can scarcely be recognised as utilitarian. Carbonell’s surreal, sculptural shapes demonstrate remarkable similarities to elements from Hieronymus Bosch paintings.

Stedelijk Museum ‘s-Hertogenbosch | 18 June 2016 - 11 September 2016

Fernando Sánchez Castillo

Spanish artist Fernando Sánchez Castillo (Madrid, 1970) is interested in the relationship between power and art. On the basis of strong political commitment, he creates installations, sculptures and video art; equal parts serious and humorous. For instance, in 2011, he purchased former dictator Franco’s pleasure yacht that he junked and transformed into an arrangement of blocks of scrap. Sánchez Castillo has made a new work for Stedelijk Museum ’s-Hertogenbosch based on King Philip II of Spain’s (1527 – 1598) fascination with Hieronymus Bosch .

Stedelijk Museum ‘s-Hertogenbosch | 18 June 2016 - 11 September 2016

Heaven, Hell & Earth

The exhibition Heaven, Hell & Earth is a triptych with work by internationally famous artists based on Hieronymus Bosch’s major themes. It centres on the eternal battle between the essential, opposing forces in life, the world and the human psyche.

The British duo Jake & Dinos Chapman portray hell, Swiss video artist Pipilotti Rist presents a heavenly contribution and Dutch artist and filmmaker Gabriel Lester will link these extremes in a new installation.

Stedelijk Museum ‘s-Hertogenbosch | 24 September 2016 - 15 January 2017

Het begin van nu? Rond de jaren ’80 [The start of now? Regarding the 1980s]

Hieronymus Bosch’s monstrous imaginings commented on the society of his time. This exhibition on the demons of the 1980s illustrates to what extent Bosch’s critical approach is still relevant.

Van Abbemuseum | 16 April 2016 – 2 October 2016

Atelier van Lieshout - SlaveCity

Van Lieshout reveals a fascination for transience, dystopia and far-reaching efficiency. Themes that are prominent in Bosch’s work.

De Pont museum | 11 June 2016 - 16 October 2016

De terugkeer van de olifant [The return of the elephant]

Between 1530 and 1540 an exceptional series of five tapestries was created in Brussels made in line with the compositions of a single artist: Hieronymus Bosch. The five have themes: The Garden of Earthly Delights, The Haywain, Saint Anthony in prayer, Saint Martin and The Elephant. Nowadays, only an incomplete series remains in the collection of the Spanish Patrimonio Nacional: The Elephant is missing.

The TextielMuseum and Het Noordbrabants Museum have collaborated on the return of the elephant with the lost tapestry brought to life in an interpretation by Jan Fabre. The process from design to manufacture can be viewed at the TextielMuseum.

TextielMuseum, Tilburg | 8 April 2016 - 30 September 2016

Dieren van Jeroen Bosch [Hieronymus Bosch’s animals]

Animals play an important role in Bosch’s work. An exhibition for young and old about symbolism, fantasy and reality.

Natuurmuseum Brabant | 1 April 2016 – 1 April 2017

The Garden of Earthly Delights

The iconic Garden of Earthly Delights has fascinated authors, artists and scientists for over half a millennium. MOTI translates the triptych into the present. Various elements have been brought to life using exciting animations by Persijn Broersen & Margit Lukács, Studio Smack, Eelco Brand and Floris Kaayk.

Museum of the Image/MOTI | 2 April 2016 - 31 December 2016
